So what I think would be helpful is if grocery stores were indexed. Don't know where to find peanut butter? Start in the dairy section with the butter butter and find a little sign that says something like "see also peanut butter: next to the jelly, aisle 3." Don't know where to find mayonaise? Start with the peanut butter (because, you know, they're both things you put on a sandwich) and find a little sign that says "see also bread: aisle 4; mayonaise: with the salad dressing, aisle 8; turkey: deli; tuna: aisle 8." Don't know where to find chicken noodle soup in HyVee? Start in the Health Market part, find only soup you know Jason would hate, and then find a little sign that says "see also normal people soup: aisle 7." Okay, that last one's just for me, maybe.
Renae, that is a truly brilliant idea!
it certainly would make shopping a whole lot easier.
p.s. - i just finished finals!! i just finished finals!! woo - hoo!!
Instead of those signs that hang above each aisle listing contents, they should put product-shaped balloons, which would be visible from across the store (given a clear sightline). Blow-up bananas, bread loafs, coke bottles, cakes, steaks, peanut butter jars, potato chip bags ... because at the store, you are thinking visually, not textually. I always have to stop looking, change gears, think about reading, and then read the signs ... which is frustrating, because as I do so, I'M WASTING TIME when I could be looking and I might find it. I'm gonna blog this...
normal people soup is my favorite!
Keith, I love that idea even more (or perhaps in addition)! Unfortunately, for the really, truly hard to find things, neither idea would probably work. For example, barley--I don't know where to start, and in between times that I use it I forget what it looks like.
on a different note - every time i walk into a grocery store, i'm always reminded of when an indian friend of ours came and visited us. he walked into baker's and was so overwhelmed by all of the food in one place (his words) - i will never forget the look on his face. we are so blessed. and most of the time, i don't even realize it.
