Imagination station

I remember vividly and with great fondness a time when I was watching something on tv with Lou. A commercial for KFC came on, and Lou turned to me and said with utter earnestness, "This is working!"

I too am an absolute sucker for a good advertising campaign. In particular, I'm completely and wholly taken in by good packaging. So perhaps it is strange that I'm so in love with Penguin's idea of marketing a few of the classics with blank covers. The idea is that you create your own (the series is called My Penguin). I do agree with their research that says that a book's cover is one of the most important factors in whether or not I'll grab a book off the shelf. And yet the idea is so intriguing. So I have to say, Penguin geniuses, this is working.

Penguin is sort of crazy good at the marketing. I fell in love with the mini-classics they did, god, probably a decade ago, tried to buy everyone I could muster even the tiniest interest in. As I was backpacking around the UK at that point they were the perfect reading material.
